Feature Length 180 minutes
Talk and Q&A 1hr, Interval 15mins, Film 1hr 40mins
Introducing an exciting new collaboration between Wells Film Centre and popular local art historian and historian Joanna Cobb.
The evening will begin with a talk by Joanna which will reveal the 'bigger picture' surrounding this familiar yet enigmatic painting by the 17th century Delft artist Jan Vermeer. One of the most celebrated works of art from the Dutch Golden Age the picture invites reading from multiple viewpoints: cultural, social, political and commercial. During the talk Joanna will discuss some of these and how they are reflected in the film. For a more immersive experience extracts of music composed during the period will be played and there will be an opportunity to view a selection of related books before the talk, which will be followed by a Q & A session. After the interval a screening of the film itself will bring the evening to a close. Joanna will provide handouts for those who wish to keep a record of the event and/or investigate further.
